Police Department

The Babbitt Police Department provides 24-hour coverage covering an area that includes 108 square miles surrounding the City of Babbitt.  The department is made up of 4 full-time officers and 5 part-time officers.  Many of our part-time officers are also employed as deputies or police officers in neighboring communities.  In addition to patrol duties, officers are actively involved in our community with many having served or are currently serving on our fire and ambulance services as well as civic organizations.

Babbitt Police Officers:

Police Chief Chad Loewen has been with the Babbitt Police Department since 1993.  He is also a D.A.R.E. Officer, EMT, former fireman, and a Minnesota DNR snowmobile and ATV safety instructor.  Chief Loewen has received a life saving commendation award. 

 

 

Jon Shenett has been a full-time officer with the Babbitt Police Department since 2007.  Officer Shenett is an EMT and Minnesota DNR snowmobile and ATV safety instructor.  Officer Shenett received a life-saving commendation award in 2012.

 

Todd Heikkila has been a full-time officer with the Babbitt Police Department since 2004.  He is trained as an EMT, fireman, and Minnesota DNR snowmobile and ATV safety instructor.
 

Charles Wulff has been a full-time officer with the Babbitt Police Department since 2012.  He is trained as a First Responder, fireman, D.A.R.E. Officer, and Minnesota DNR snowmobile and ATV safety instructor.

 

 

Cody Loewen is a part-time police officer with the Babbitt Police Department and began his law enforcement career in 2013.  He is employed full-time as a police officer with the Hibbing Police Department and is trained as a Minnesota DNR snowmobile and ATV safety instructor.

 

 

Glen Salo is a part-time officer with the Babbitt Police Department and his law enforcement career began in 1985.  Officer Salo was also a full-time officer with us for several years and has worked part-time for several other neighboring police departments.



Dennis Koponen is a part-time officer with the Babbitt Police Department and began his law enforcement career in 1992.  He is trained as an EMT and fireman, and has received a life saving commendation award.  Officer Koponen is employed full-time as a Sergeant with the Ely Police Department.

 

Adam Borchert is a part-time officer with the Babbitt Police Department He bagan his law enforcement career in 2003 and works full-time as a Lake County Deputy.

 

The Babbitt Police Department has access to a volunteer Chaplain. He operates under a division of the St. Louis County Sheriff's Department and is available to provide professional, non-denominational services for police department employees, their families and also for citizens. The Chaplain is available on call and also participate in ride-alongs with officers and other department activities. The Chaplain that serves the Babbitt area is Father Bill Skarich.

 

Father Bill Skarich was ordained as a Catholic Priest in 1999 and serves at St. Anthony's in Ely and St. Pius X in Babbitt.
