About Babbitt, Minnesota

Babbitt is a small community of 1,400 residents located at the eastern end of the legendary Mesabi Iron Mining Range near Birch Lake in Northeast Minnesota.  Only two portages from the BWCA, its location offers a unique combination of access to outdoor activities and cultural and business opportunities. 

Outdoor activities include excellent fishing on Birch Lake with a range of resort or camping facilities available.  The area also offers excellent opportunities for viewing or photographing wildlife such as wolves, moose, deer, bear. and smaller game.

Electric & Motorized Bikes

Please remember that all electric and motorized bicycles/scooters must abide by all regular traffic laws. These can not be driven on the sidewalks and must adhere to all stop signs, speed limits, etc. 

Please help us keep our community safe!

Watering Hours

In accordance with Ordinance No. 111, outdoor watering hours are from 7:00 - 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. only. Washing of cars is permissible at any time in the driveway. Please comply with these hours to avoid further restrictions. This regulation is enforced by the Babbitt Police Department. 

City Garbage & Utilities Rates

City of Babbitt garbage bills will be $91/quarter beginning July 1, 2023. Any bags may be used. Bags must be placed in a covered garbage can not to exceed 96 gallons in size. Garbage will not be picked up if it is not in a can.

Water/Sewer bills will be $105/month, beginning January 1, 2024. Sewer Maintenance (Snowbirds, etc.) Fee is $61/month, after $50.00 disconnect/reconnect fee is paid.

Garbage Collection & Recycling

Effective June 5, 2023, garbage collection will take place every Monday by 7:00 a.m. If a holiday falls on a Monday, garbage pickup will be provided that Tuesday. Please have your garbage bags in a container and out by the road at that time to assure pickup. Bags should be easily "liftable," please do not overfill bags! Residents are allowed 2 garbage cans at 92-gallon capacity each (total of 192 gallons for trash); these garbage cans must have lids hinged or tethered to the cans.

Picking up of grass clippings, etc. is an additional service that is provided by the garbage hauler, do not place in garbage bags. Yard waste and applicances are picked up every Thursday. Brush must be in 4 ft length bundles only, tied together and easily manageable.

Effective July, 2023, garbage rates will increase from $65.00 quarterly to $91.00 quarterly. 

The Recyle Center in town is for resident use only and is emptied once a week. If the bins are full, do not add more recyclables or leave them on the ground. The gates will be closed by city employees once the bins are noticeably full.

Effective August 1, 2023, the hours of the Recycle Center will be from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. daily. The gates to the facilities will be closed outside of these times.

The Cardboard Shed will be open from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday only. This shed is for CORRUGATED cardboard only!
